Hula Hula

This week, in mytown@monty.mx, the Cedim desing school, is running a series of events called "Design week"

As part of these, which is divide in 4 fases, "re-think" (which is one of the fases) , consisted in conferences and workshops last Tuesday. There were a number of related lectures during the morning, for students and specialists. One group in charge of one of these were the famous mexican designers form Grupo Hula+Hula.

El cha! and Enrique Ovalles, founders of this design firm commented in interview: "We consider ourselves fortunate to work with things we like, also companies we like, and also with music and to graphically traduct what others do in sound"

"What´s horrible for some people migh be great for others. This incredible freedom to decide gotta be one of the best qualities of human beings" said Cha!, Bassist of mexican bands Moderatto and Fobia.

"Customer is sometimes the worst word of all:They demand and they're not even designers, so they do not always know for real what they mean or imply by their requests "

"The motto of hula hula, in fact, is " the customer is Not always right. " Declares Cha! for that matter.

About possible criticism about desing work made for groups like Moderatto or RBD, which belong to musical marketsl regarded by some as a little serious, the hula-hula's say: "We do not go " Uy Yo no hago estas ondas ", but rather take some things like challenges. It's a little childish to judge or tag music as good or bad. We do not decide what is right or wrong "

"We have worked with Alacranes del norte, Mijares, Liquits, RBD, each representing a different visions of music, which for some can be good and for others not so much. Nobody has to be wrong" Adds Cha!

The hula+hulas, Aware of the amount of work they do with popular culture, in terms of music or design, say about that: "You can not disconnect the designer of the musician, as much as you can't disconnect the professional from the person.
All the time you're exposed to what you see on the street or on the internet, and is there for us to analyze it."said Cha!

"Creativity has to come onto you, while working," adds Ovalles, "And you can not always be focused on one thing. We're always looking who or what has its image changed: Design is a way of life for us. We are the masters of the sketches in napkins. "

"We do not work much with focus groups or that sorto of things, we propose to our clients, friends that are musicians, who look for us to work, because of the way we work" said Cha!

On the matter of work with massive product designing such as cd's art and/or booklets: "We've been lucky to work with people who do not use these methods (focus groups), so perhaps what we do, or how we do it might be esentially different to that."

"And these things do not go through filters as focus groups, but rather by artistic sensitivities" Concludes the bassist from the capital city.
